Since the 1950s the poodle skirt has been the fashion accessory of choice and one of the most loved vintage styles, even inspiring their own poetry.

Prettiest girl in school. Poodle skirt and saddle shoes. The noe all the fellows wanted to woo. Top of the list in Who’s Who. Looks that made the guys stop and stare. Hearts beware. Eyes would become dreamy and hearts fall. When she strutted through the halls.

What is a Poodle Skirt?

The Poodle skirt is a wide circle skirt, typically in a solid color with an eye-catching design embroidered or sewn into the fabric.

This was often a poodle, or it could be musical notes, flowers, whimsical animals, hot rod cars--basically it could be any design, silhouette, or letters a lady could dream up.

In classic 50s fashion, the length of the poodle skirt for women was mid-calf, which oozed class and sophistication, with a bit of fun.

For teenagers and girls, the hemline was just below the knee.

They embraced the colorful vintage style, and personalized it for school dances and everyday loungewear.

“A fashion that does not reach the streets is not a fashion.” - Coco Chanel

What is the story behind the Poodle Skirt?

Two years after World War II ended, in 1947, the beautiful 25 year old Juli Lynne Charlot, who was a budding singer and actress was invited to a Christmas party.

However, upon opening her closet she experienced a girl’s worst nightmare--nothing to wear.

Also, having no money, she decided a handmade skirt for the Christmas party would have to do.

Charlot said, "If I had known how to sew, or had the money to purchase better materials, I would have never made the circle skirt."

Luckily her mother owned a factory that had a full supply of felt that she could use for free. "I cut the circle out of felt, which allowed me to cut a complete circle skirt without having any seams. I added some whimsical Christmas motif appliqués.”

Her homemade skirt was so unique and adorable that she received tons of compliments.

After the party Charlot took a few of her holiday skirt to a boutique in Beverly Hills.

These adorable retro skirts quickly sold out and the store ordered more, asking for some non-Christmas ones, and she designed a poodle skirt with dancing dachshunds.

She meant for her skirts to tell a story and be conversation starters at parties.

Charlot continued to sell to more and more boutiques, and ultimately started her own fashion company, which stayed in business through the 1980s.

Why were poodles popular in the 50s?

Poodles were very popular in the 1950s due to the beginnings of the Westmister Dog Show that glamorized the highly intelligent dog, garnering them a huge cult following.

They embodied both looks and brains, and were simply gorgeous with their refined manners and elaborate hairdo’s.

Rich cultured ladies chose poodles as their dog of choice to be seen with.

Thus the poodle became associated with refinement, elegance and upper-class.

Film executives took note, staging glamorous photoshoots of top starlets with their poodles.

Perhaps you will recognize the one and only Audrey Hepburn posing with a poodle for a publicity shot for Sabrina.

Even though Julie Lynne’s first skirt was with adorable weiner dog (a dachshund), the boutiques quickly asked for a poodle design.

And the rest, as they say, is history...
