Who designed Audrey Hepburn's clothes in Breakfast at Tiffany's?

Hubert De Givenchy (as in the founder of Givenchy, and also known for creating the little black dress) designed the outfits for Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's, including her legendary black dress in the opening scenes.

The only outfit with an unknown designer is the jeweled pink cocktail dress, that Holly wears back from her date. Apparently Audrey Hepburn was not only a muse to Hubert Givenchy, but a good friend as well!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Summary

Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) is a fashionable, yet naive New Yorker, trying to earn enough money to get ahead in life.

In order to achieve her dreams, she decides to up her game and land herself an eligible millionaire. However, her plans are foiled by the arrival of a handsome new neighbor in her apartment complex.

Paul Varjak (George Peppard), is also penniless, (and already has a woman in his life) but finds himself drawn to Holly.

Fun fact!

Guess what other stylish A-List Old Hollywood stars turned down the role of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffanys? None other than Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, and Kim Novak! We’re glad Audrey Hepburn starred in the role of the charming and stylish Holly Golightly.

Audrey Hepburn said that her role as Holly Golightly was "the jazziest of my career," but added "I'm an introvert. Playing the extroverted girl was the hardest thing I ever did.”

Audrey Hepburn 1960s Fashion in Breakfast at Tiffanys: #1 - Holly Golightly’s Diamond Dress Outfit

It is early dawn in New York. A yellow taxi cab pulls up in front of Tiffanys. Audrey Hepburn steps out, a vision of fashionable elegance.

Audrey Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly is wearing the iconic Givenchy black dress, arguably the most famous "little black dress" ever worn.

The famous little black dress is floor length, with subtle cutouts on the back bodice.

The reason this dress is referred to as the “Audrey Hepburn Diamond Dress” is because it is accessorized with strands of diamonds and pearls, including a statement jeweled pendant. The jewels almost appear to be sewn into the dress itself.

Her diamond earring and matching jeweled hair clip complete her outfit.

Holly Golightly’s fashion accessories are all in black–long gloves, delicate kitten pumps, and a sharp purse.

She slowly makes her way back to her apartment, which is located conveniently close to Tiffanys.

Audrey Hepburn steps in front of Tiffanys, pulls out a warm croissant and coffee, which she enjoys while staring longingly at the jewelry.

Audrey Hepburn 1960s Fashion in Breakfast at Tiffanys: #2 - Holly Golightly’s Sleep Costume and Sleep Mask

The Breakfast at Tiffany's pajama scene opens with Audrey Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly being jarred awake by her door buzzer and her tabby purring.

Audrey Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly is wearing an oversized white tuxedo sleep shirt. It is a pullover style and has a tuxedo half-button front.

Holly Golightly’s sleep mask is a stunning shade of Tiffany’s blue.

It has gold embroidered eyebrows and eyelashes, and a gold tie, adding a fun and whimsical touch to her sleep outfit!

Audrey Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly is also wearing lavender and gold earplugs with tassels that she comically removes and replaces to hear what her visitor has to say.

The lavender earplugs are quite the quintessential 1960s fashion accessory for the style icon, which continues to be copied to this day by costume makers around the world trying to recreate Holly Golightly’s charming Sleep Costume!

Holly Golightly chatters with her new neighbor, telling him about how she’s crazy about Tiffanys, as it’s the perfect place to cheer yourself up, when you’re down, which she calls “having the case of the reds.”

She then rushes around her flat getting ready to go to Sing Sing (the prison) for a visit, explaining to Paul she’s visiting a man who was alleged to be part of the maffia, but it could never be proven.

Legend has it that the original Breakfast at Tiffanys footage had Audrey Hepburn getting out of the bathtub and wrapping herself up in a sheet, before rushing to greet guests. The deleted scene was published in Life magazine, but the footage was too risque to make the final film cut in the 1960’s.

Holly excitedly announces that they will spend the whole day doing things they have never done!

Paul Varjak kisses her on the neck. Startled she pulls back and returns to her book, saying coldly that she’s busy.

He asks what’s wrong and tells her that he loves her.

Holly Golightly says she’s reading about South America because she needs to understand the country if she’s going to move there and marry a rich man, who was at her party the other night.

Hurt, Paul argues with her and then storms out of the library.

She announces that she’s leaving for Rio the next morning to marry her rich South American boyfriend. Paul Varjak asks if he’s proposed and she says she believes Jose will pop the big question in Rio.

Paul Varjak tells her he’ll take her out for a farewell dinner, and she replies “Only if it’s someplace I can go like this!”

Quite a different view of casual outfits they had back in the 1960s!

After dinner, Holly Golightly gets arrested due to her friendship with a mafia character. Paul picks her up from prison on bail and tells her she needs to lie low.

Her rich boyfriend in Rio sends a breakup note.  Holly Golightly asks Paul Varjak to read while she applies her lipstick, as she can’t bear to hear it, without her lipstick on.

Holly Golightly says she still wants to fly to Rio, and Paul Varjak says he won’t let her because he loves her.

They argue, and he gets out of the cab and throws the Tiffanys engraved Crackerjack ring at her, saying he doesn’t want it anymore.

He’s been hauling it around for months.

Breakfast at Tiffanys Trench Coat

For the final closing scene, Holly Golightly is again wearing her famous Breakfast at Tiffany's Trench coat.
